“A man who lived on Long Island was able one day to satisfy a lifelong ambition by purchasing for himself a very fine barometer. When the instrument arrived at his home, he was extremely disappointed to find that the indicating needle appeared to be stuck, pointing to the sector marked ‘HURRICANE.’ After shaking the barometer very vigorously several times, its new owner sat down and wrote a scorching letter to the store from which he had purchased the instrument.
The following morning, on the way to his office in New York, he mailed the letter. That evening he returned to Long Island to find not only the barometer missing but also his entire house also. A hurricane had destroyed it” (E. Schuyler English).
Trust is difficult. With lies and manipulations permeating our society, it’s not surprising that we doubt what we are told. We don’t trust other people. We question teachers and authorities. Many doubt the Bible. We live in an age where it seems like most people are out to take advantage of us.
Perhaps this is why a relationship with God is so satisfying. We can trust God. He created us and therefore cares for us (Genesis 1). He cannot lie, so He will always tell us the truth in His Word (Titus 1:2; 2 Timothy 3:16-17). He is all-knowing and will make the right decisions for our lives (1 John 3:19-20). God is perfect and blameless (Matthew 5:48; Psalm 18:30).
What a pure and reassuring relationship we can have with our Creator. This is why we should always seek to “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
God tells us about what to expect in this life (2 Peter 1:3). God tells us how to be saved from sin and hell (Acts 2:38; 2 Peter 3:21). God tells us about the Final Day (Matthew 25:31ff). We can have faith that these things will come true. Let’s trust God. No one is more worthy.
