Over the last few months, I’ve been burning the midnight oil working on our home remodel project. It’s been tedious and difficult, which is to be expected. These things rarely come easy. However, one of the worst parts about doing a home renovation is pulling the appropriate permits and then going through the dreaded inspections. The inspectors are notorious for being difficult and nit-picky with professional contractors. As a homeowner who did my own work, they seem to have a slightly softer side. But make no mistake, home inspections can be difficult. It’s hard to know all the code. It’s hard to know how strict the inspector will be. It’s hard to know if I accidentally overlooked something. However, after everything passes inspection, it’s very rewarding.
As the New Year quickly approaches, we often use this time to do some self-inspection and see if everything is as it should be. Hopefully, a thorough spiritual examination is part of this process. 2 Corinthians 13:5 says, “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you– unless indeed you fail the test?”
This spiritual inspection is one we can’t afford to fail. Thankfully, God has clearly laid out the guidelines for us. We can know exactly what He expects. The good news is, He doesn’t require perfection, and His grace even covers our mistakes as long as we keep trying to follow Him. As we enter into the New Year, let’s examine ourselves to see if we are where we need to be spiritually.
