Nails On A Chalkboard

#ds31 - Nails on a Chalk Board

The very mention of nails scraping across a chalkboard can be enough to cause us to cringeFew noises send shivers so deep. If channeled correctly, this noise has the potential to become a great military weapon, or at least to keep unruly children in line by an exasperated mother. Either way, this noise is one of nightmares. In fact, as I’ve been writing, I think I’ve had chills run up my spine about 20 times.

It’s interesting how noises can cause such a powerful response in us. It’s what makes music so very beautiful. It’s what makes familiar voices so sweet and comforting. But of course, like nails on a chalkboard, some noises are pure torture.

When we look at the different sounds in Scripture, we might think of the conquering of Jericho (Joshua 6) or maybe the powerful noises the Hebrew people heard at the foot of Mt. Sinai (Exodus 20:18-19). However, the sounds that might first come to mind are the ones that will happen when Jesus returns. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 says, “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise firstThen we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.

People respond to noise differently. When we envision the day when Christ returns and whatever incredible noises will come with that scene, what will our response be? Will the noise cause us to cringe in fear, knowing we’re not ready for judgment? Or will it be one of sweet comfort, knowing we get to go home to be with the Lord?

The good news is, we still have time to change our final destination. Let’s make sure we’re ready for Christ’s return so we can rejoice when He “descends from heaven with a shout.”
