We all know animals use camouflage to their advantage, but sometimes it’s amazing to see just how perfectly they blend in. Take a look at the picture above and see if you can spot the hiding snow leopard. It took me a while before I finally spotted it (Check below for the answer). It’s awesome how well predators can disappear into their surroundings. This is great if you’re a predator, but not so great if you’re the prey.
It’s interesting that Satan is compared to a lion, which is also a master of camouflage. I’ve heard stories of African safari’s where people were driving by and several unseen lions emerged from the grass just a few feet away from the vehicles. 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” If there is an animal I don’t want prowling after me, it’s a lion. Perhaps that is why this Scripture is so scary to think about, not just because Satan is prowling, but because we might not even see him coming.
2 Corinthians 4:4 reveals, “in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” Satan is the “god of this world” being referred to here, and what he is doing is “blinding the minds of the unbelieving.” Maybe this blinding comes in the form of evolution, or in the thousands of differing religions in the world. It’s hard to say exactly how Satan is blinding people, except for the fact that he is using some incredibly good camouflage to keep people from seeing the danger they are in.
No matter how good his camouflage is, we can beat Satan. First of all, we need to make absolutely sure that our life lines up with the unchanged, God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16-17), completed (Jude 3), and all answering word of God (2 Peter 1:3). If something doesn’t come directly from the Bible or doesn’t match up with Scripture, then it could be well-camouflaged false teaching. Then, once we see how Satan is working, we must resist him (James 4:7) and never give him an opportunity into our lives (Ephesians 4:27).
Without a doubt Satan is a mysterious, frightening, and deadly opponent, but let’s not overpower Him. He is no match for our Lord, and we already know that Satan is going to lose in the end (Revelation 20:10). When we have God on our side, we can always beat Satan no matter how well he is camouflaged (1 John 4:4).
