“12 Things Most Likely to Destroy the World”

There is just something about the end of the world that is tantalizing for people to think about.  Maybe it’s because of some morbid curiosity. Maybe it’s because it is terrifying. Maybe it’s because we like to let our imaginations run wild.  Maybe it’s because we like to try and figure out the “unknown.”  For whatever reason, the subject of the destruction of the universe is intriguing.  One report led by Dennis Pamlin of the Global Challenge Foundation offers a list of 12 science-based risks to our world.  So, according to their research, here are the “12 Things Most Likely to Destroy the World” (Vox).
1. Catastrophic Climate Change.
2. Nuclear War.
3. Global Pandemic.
4. Ecological Catastrophe.
5. Global System Collapse.
6. Major Asteroid Impact.
7. Supervolcano.
8. Synthetic Biology.
9. Nanotechnology.
10. Artificial Intelligence.
11. Future Bad Governance.
12. Unknown Unknowns.
There is no doubt these potential catastrophes are interesting, but to be blunt, they are all wrong.  It’s not surprising the researchers seemed to have avoided the Bible in their research, but this is likely why the real answer is missing.  The Bible is always right in its predictions and claims.  Being all-knowing, all-powerful, eternal, and the creator of the universe, God’s prediction track record is pretty good (like 100% good).
Scripture is very clear about how the world will be destroyed.  2 Peter 2:7-10 gives us the answer: “But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.”
To put it simply, the world is going to be destroyed by fire. The specific ways God will use fire to destroy the world is a mystery, but the universe will one day be burned up with fire.  We no longer need to wonder and speculate.
The only question that remains is how to prepare for the end.  Thankfully, God has provided the answer to this as well. We must get spiritually right with the Lord (Acts 2:38; Galatians 3:26-27; 1 Peter 3:21; Revelation 2:10).  Though scary and unknown, the end is imminent and inevitable.    We can either be caught prepared or unprepared (Matthew 25:1-13).  Will we be ready?
