There have been some scary warnings. The most recent warning has caused plenty of fear for upcoming winter Olympic games. An extremist group recently issued this warning, “We’ve prepared a present for you and all tourists who’ll come over. If you will hold the Olympics, you’ll get a present from us for the Muslim blood that’s been spilled” (Fox News). These threats have caused people to shy away from the Sochi games. Approximately 330,000 tickets are unsold with about three weeks remaining (Yahoo).
Many warnings over time have proven to be valid. Some of these warnings have come from terrorists, others from weather services, and still others from countries and governments. Of all the warnings issued, the most serious ones haven’t come from these sources, but from the Lord. Through many parts of the Old Testament, God warned His people to turn away from idols and come back to Him. God warned that they would be separated from Him if they didn’t. Ignoring God’s warnings, God’s people were punished, driven into captivity, and eventually cut off from Him completely, just like He warned.
For God’s people today, we also have been issued a warning. God said in 2 Peter 3:10-12, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!”
For the Olympics, let’s hope and pray the terror warnings turn out to be empty threats. However, as Christians, let’s make no mistake; Judgment Day is coming. We must be prepared for that day to come at any moment (Matthew 25:1-13). Let’s live our lives in such a way so we can echo the well-known words of that beautiful song, “It is well with my soul.”
